Job Duties
Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking an Investment Officer
to join the Real Assets investments team. The Real Assets team
invests primarily in private markets across real estate,
infrastructure, and natural resources (timberland, farmland,
energy, minerals & mining). The team collaborates with its peers in
other Public and Private asset groups. Real Assets currently
manages over $14 billion and has a target allocation of 14% of the
Total Plan, which may grow to 15% of the Total Plan, within the
next two years. This position would assist in managing and
overseeing existing and prospective new managers within the Real
Assets program, in addition to some administrative tasks within the
team. This position is essential in realizing VRS' mission of
securing the financial future of public sector employees.
The Real Assets team currently manages the portfolio through a mix
of commingled funds, joint ventures, and separate accounts. The
program spans over 50 manager relationships and over 100 individual
investments. The Investment Officer would be responsible for
primary monitoring duties on a subset of those manager and
investments, including:
--- Review of quarterly financial reports
--- Attendance at annual/semi-annual meetings
--- Evaluation of potential co-investment activities from the
manager subsets
--- Contributing to new manager due diligence and portfolio
construction discussions across the program
--- Obtain market intelligence from meetings with potential
managers, industry research and periodicals, conferences, and
networking within the Real Assets community (inputs from these
numerous sources are critical elements in helping to guide the
allocation decisions of the Real Assets program. Potential new
opportunities must meet strict investment criteria, and withstand a
rigorous due diligence review process)
--- Responsible for various portfolio monitoring reports and other
administrative tasks as needed, including monthly performance
management, new account set up, and/or quarterly portfolio
reports
Minimum Qualifications
--- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, accounting,
or an equivalent combination of education and experience
--- Five or more years' experience in investment management or
related industry
--- Experience in a variety of asset classes including commercial
real estate, infrastructure, and/or natural resources
--- Advanced capabilities in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
--- Process mindset and interest in solving complex problems
--- Ability to work well across various investment and investment
support groups and support a collaborative environment
--- Demonstrates curiosity, strong analytic, and problem-solving
skills
--- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
--- Superb work ethic, attention to detail, team orientation, and
commitment to excellence
Additional Considerations
--- CFA and/or CAIA designation preferred; pursuit of these
designations and/or additional training is expected
--- Familiarity with Python and/or large data processing skills are
also preferred
Special Instructions
*VRS is unable to provide sponsorship, for this position*
This position follows the hybrid work model currently requiring two
days onsite and three days remote. Effective September 2024, this
hybrid arrangement will require three days onsite and two days
remote.
Investment due diligence performed on external investment managers
(both existing and prospective) and other related entities will
include both on-site and virtual visits; therefore, out-of-state
travel and occasional international will be required.
