Position Summary Information




General Information
The Gus Bus Program at JMU's Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services (IIHHS) is an out of school learning program that supports the academic achievement of children in the local community by providing additional learning time and enrichment opportunities in after-school settings and on the Gus Bus mobile classroom vehicles. The Gus Bus staff visit local neighborhoods on the mobile classroom vehicles to provide enrichment, story time, activities, and book checkout for elementary-aged children. Additionally, the Gus Bus program coordinates after-school enrichment and school- and home-based tutoring for four Harrisonburg elementary schools through 21st Century Community Learning Center grants, as well as other locations using other grant funds.




Duties and Responsibilities
Program Specialists are responsible for assisting with planning and implementing after-school enrichment programming that aligns with VDOE 21st Century Community Learning Center grant proposals. This includes planning and teaching programs in school buildings or on the Gus Bus mobile classroom vehicle. Program Specialists participate in weekly Gus Bus team meetings. This position will include occasional participation in special program or community events. Program Specialists will maintain attendance records for programming.




Qualifications


  • Must be able to work evenings (Monday through Friday 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) and occasional weekends.
  • Knowledge of child development and best practices in early childhood education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with children, youth, adults, agency professionals, school staff and community members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, access, and inclusion.
  • Ability to excel at multi-tasking and taking initiative in an independent work environment.
  • General computer skills required, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.





    Condition(s) of Employment
    This is a part-time wage position working an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a calendar year with no benefits.

    Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
