Position Summary Information
The JMU School of Professional & Continuing Education (SPCE)
Professional Development team is seeking to add a qualified
instructor to its noncredit human resources training team.
We seek a qualified individual interested in teaching the SHRM
Certification Preparation program.
The JMU SPCE SHRM Certification Preparation program is a noncredit
program intended for human resources professionals seeking the SHRM
Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified
Professional (SHRM-SCP) credentials. The content is aligned with
the current SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (SHRM BASK).
The curriculum, slides, and other instructional materials are
provided to the instructor. This course meets for 36 live
instructional hours, usually in 12 three-hour sessions. The cohorts
meet twice per week, e.g., Tuesdays and Thursdays (actual days and
times can vary between cohorts but will be the same for a specific
cohort). The live instruction is complemented by an online learning
portal that provides students with learning support. Typical class
size ranges from 5-12.

The first opportunity is to co-teach the SHRM Certification
Preparation program in-person in downtown Harrisonburg meeting on
Mondays and Wednesdays between February 6 - March 15 from
1:30-4:30pm EST. This cohort's class sessions will meet in the Ice
House at 127 W Bruce St. Classes may meet online in the event of
inclement weather. The co-teaching arrangement means sharing
instructional duties with our current SHRM Certification
Preparation instructor. Traditionally, this arrangement means one
instructor teaches the first three weeks of the program and the
co-instructor teachers the second three weeks, though this can be
negotiated between the successful candidate and the current

instructor team. In addition to the in-person program, JMU SPCE
will offer two 100% online evening options in 2023. One cohort
begins in mid-March and another is scheduled in early October.
These are usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm EST.
The stipend for teaching the full program is $2000 and for
co-teaching half of the program is $1000. Payment is provided in
full upon completion of teaching or co-teaching a cohort.
JMU SPCE SHRM programs are offered to the general public. The
training programs serve professionals and organizations seeking to
develop and deepen their knowledge of human resource principles.
Participants in the JMU SPCE SHRM training programs have a range of
professional experiences. Participants also come from a range of
industries and from a range of different organizational levels. JMU
SPCE seeks instructors whose professional and life experiences
enhance the learning experience for our diverse adult learners.

Duties and Responsibilities
The instructor is primarily responsible for delivering live
instruction. The curriculum, slides, and PDF materials are supplied
to the instructor, and the instructor is encouraged to supplement
the curriculum with their own experience and expertise.
The live instruction is complemented by an online learning portal
that provides students with significant learning support.
Qualified applicants will hold a current certification as a SHRM-CP
or SHRM-SCP. Preferably, they have significant years of experience
working in human resource roles. Preferably, applicants have
experience as a trainer or demonstrate interest and aptitude for
