Position Summary Information

General Information
The Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia seeks a part-time Community College Program Specialist. Our mission is to reduce risk for suicide across Virginia's higher education settings by providing Support for strategic planning, consultation, multi-tiered training and related prevention resources. The Center serves 16 public, 27 private, and 23 community colleges/universities. Services are available at no cost and are provided through a partnership of the Virginia Department of Health, the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and The Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services at James Madison University.

Duties and Responsibilities
This person will work closely with the Director and Center staff to:

  • Build professional relationships with Virginia Community College System administrators, faculty, and student support personnel as well as funding agencies, experts in the field, and other stakeholders.
  • Plan, develop, and deliver educational programs in suicide prevention and emotional wellness to diverse audiences through webinars, online trainings, videos, in-person presentations, continuing education programs, and listserv communications.
  • Provide technical assistance, consultation and support services to community college campuses in wellness promotion and comprehensive suicide prevention. This may include advising on conducting a needs assessment, selecting or revising a program, developing or revising policies and procedures, strategic planning, and responding to crises.
  • Share expertise in college student emotional wellness and suicide prevention with the wider public (e.g., through media interviews).
  • Support contact with stakeholders through helping to coordinate and co-hosting regular meetings of our statewide intercampus educational network.
  • Travel to campuses throughout Virginia to build relationships with community college campus representatives, better understand campus needs, and provide training, as well as attend state and regional events and conferences (approximately 5-15% of time).
  • Work with campus administrators and statewide leadership to expand data collection on the mental health needs and challenges to well-being in community college students.
  • Collect and compile statistical and qualitative data to support program goals, share in educational presentations, and demonstrate needs and outcomes to funders.
  • Provide creative vision to plan and develop novel initiatives that will reach community college campus professionals.
  • Apply knowledge of current strengths, needs and challenges in Virginia community colleges to suicide prevention planning.
  • Evaluate effectiveness and impact of Center programs and activities.
  • Assist with curriculum planning and administration of professional development credits for relevant programs.
  • Assist with the design of relevant research projects, including participatory research initiatives.
  • Contribute to website development through identification of relevant educational resources.
  • Apply knowledge of state/federal government policies and procedures to consultations and initiatives.
  • Provide trainings to campus communities throughout the Commonwealth.
  • Support and supervise interns and volunteers.
  • Support grant development and management.
  • Support the development of an annual work plan.
  • Teach tailored and culturally tuned strategies for suicide prevention to support diverse student populations.


    • Experience working in a professional role within a community college.
    • Experience developing surveys as well as collecting and analyzing data.
    • Excellence in written and verbal skills.
    • Experience in teaching, training, or public speaking.
    • Comfort talking about and addressing the topic of suicide on a day-to-day basis.
    • Familiarity with Google applications, Microsoft suite, and survey management software (e.g., Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, Question Pro, Google Forms).


      • Degree in health education, public health, counseling, psychology (applied field), social work, higher education, or related field.
      • Experience using a public health approach to prevention and wellness promotion.
      • Experience in systems-level strategic planning for suicide prevention and/or mental health promotion.
      • Experience in instructional design or course design.
      • Experience in working with diversity, equity and inclusion on a college campus.
      • Experience in strategic planning to support special populations (LGBTQ+, BIPOC, individuals with disabilities, veterans, individuals with substance use disorders, individuals who have experienced sexual assault).
      • Ability to read, critically analyze, synthesize, and translate scientific research to both written and oral presentation formats for both professional and lay audiences.
      • Experience in applying state and/or federal law to higher education practices.

        The successful candidate will have strong time management skills, ethical reasoning, and emotional intelligence. They will be highly motivated, organized, able to work independently, innovative in approaching tasks, and creative in identifying ways to make teams' work more effective and efficient.

        Condition(s) of Employment
        This is a part-time wage position working an average of 29 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits.

        The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

        The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
