If so, consider applying to the City of Harrisonburg Public Works Department's Crew Supervisor for Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings position!The Crew Supervisor for Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $22.21 - $25.54 per hour (equivalent to $46,196 - $53,123 annually). A n exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. The ideal candidate for this position will supervise and lead employees responsible for the technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of signs and pavement markings and other traffic control devices. Additionally, the selected candidate will be responsible for creating sign designs that range from traffic signage and digital graphics to larger exterior signage. The position provides the opportunity for the selected candidate to be creative while also understanding the engineering requirements for designing a structural sign. As the Crew Supervisor for Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings, you will:
    • Perform various supervisory duties, including demonstrating effective leadership to promote a positive work environment, establishing daily work schedules and priorities, conducting performance evaluations, assisting in the recruitment process for Traffic Engineering staff, and more;
    • Oversee, lead, direct, mentor, and provide training for traffic sign work crews in the field that fabricate, install, repair, and maintain traffic signs and road markings according to city, state, and federal regulations;
    • Complete daily reports and maintain records on all field activities, dispatched calls, work orders, and service requests, and provide information for cost analysis reports utilizing Cityworks computer work order system;
    • Supervise the fabrication of regulatory, warning, guide, and construction signs, including but not limited to various specialty signs, banners and posters;
    • Monitor and maintain inventory of sign making materials, frequently used signs, materials, and supplies;
    • Oversee and have the knowledge to fabricate signs using a computerized sign maker using Flexi Sign and FLEXIPRINT and CUT software as needed to produce traffic signs or specialty signs;
    • Supervise and support the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of motorized painting equipment;
    • Efficiently and safely operate all pavement marking equipment and manage the Pavement Marking Program;
    • Assist with Traffic Sign and Road Marking plan review;
    • Maintain awareness of new trends, developments, and technologies in the field of Signs and Road Marking maintenance and repair programs and incorporate new developments as appropriate;
    • Use GIS software to update locations of assets;
    • Perform snow and ice removal by operating a dump truck with snowplow and salt spreader attachments and other equipment;
    • Participate in the stand-by rotation, responding to off hours emergency calls as necessary to aid in traffic signal malfunctions, sign damage, inclement weather, and accidents;
    • Perform other duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsMinimum Requirements:
      • High school diploma or GED and considerable (3-5 years) experience in maintenance, construction, or utility work (electrical preferred) including some supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
      • Valid driver's license.
      • Availability to participate in the stand-by rotation, responding to off hours emergency calls as necessary.
      • Availability to work day, evening, or blended shift work hours, as needed for business necessity.
      • Experience utilizing sign-making software and in graphic design is preferred but not required.

        • Possession of valid Commercial Driver's License Class B or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
        • Possession of VDOT Intermediate Work Zone certification within one (1) year of hire date, or as class scheduling permits per department approval.
        • Current possession of or ability to acquire IMSA Sign and Pavement Marking Level I certification within one (1) year of hire date and IMSA Sign and Pavement Marking Level II certification within two (2) years of hire date, or as quickly as training/certification is available.The ideal candidate should have:
          • Considerable knowledge of the occupational maintenance and repair practices associated with traffic signs and pavement markings;
          • Advanced knowledge of large format printers;
          • Skill in the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment;
          • Ability to:
          • Prepare reports;
          • Communicate both verbally and in writing and provide directions in either format;
          • Read and write and perform basic arithmetic functions;
          • Make independent decisions;
          • Utilize computer software programs;
          • Effectively supervise the work of others and learn basic personnel management/employment law regulations and leadership strategies;
          • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.The selected candidate for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
          • DMV driving record review;
          • FMCSA drug screen;
          • Job-specific physical;
          • FMCSA Clearinghouse Query; and
