General Information
The School of Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication is
seeking part-time instructors to teach our introductory writing
course, WRTC 103: Rhetorical Reading and Writing. This course
teaches students how to read and write effectively in situations
they have not encountered. Our faculty members are currently
collaborating to improve curriculum and instruction that focuses on
developing rhetorical awareness. This course serves first-year
students as part of the university's General Education program.
Our department actively supports collaboration, mentorship, and
continuing professional development. Adjuncts are eligible for, and
encouraged to participate in, various professional development
opportunities within our department, college, and university.
Adjuncts are eligible for grant-supported initiatives and have full
access to our library and recreational facilities.
This position is not eligible for benefits.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instructors will deliver courses in person on the campus of James
Madison University. Available sections to teach during the fall
2022 and future semesters will vary based on enrollment needs. The
academic semester begins two weeks prior to the first day of
classes each semester and ends two weeks following the end of
classes each semester. Duties are for the academic semester and
include course preparation, lecturing, leading discussions, grading
and holding weekly office hours.
Qualifications
Required: Master's degree in Rhetoric and Composition or a related
field.
Preferred: Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching
introductory college writing.
Conditions of Employment
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a
criminal background check.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information
regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such
as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement
authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures,
protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon
confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters
of importance related to security and safety. The report includes
statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes
that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or
property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on
public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible
from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing
fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a
description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety
system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar
year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking,
and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student
housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire
safety information.
The JMU Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes the
Harrisonburg campus and the three overseas branch campuses;
